The final requirement in our GIBS Manager Development Programme involved a presentation to the company’s executive team. I was nominated by the team to be the opener – for some reason, I was perceived as gutsy (I wasn’t). With my heart pounding imperceptibly, I did exactly as we had planned, which was to deliver a brutal critique of the company’s HR practices. We thought we were smart – our business improvement strategy offered a near-perfect solution. But all I succeeded in doing wasto raise the eyebrow of the CEO of a JSE ‘royal’– a man who took his turnaround efforts quite personally. No matter how right we were, and no matter how snappy my opening was, we had failed the most basic of business requirements – the ability to influence.
The seeds of Kartwheel were sewn in that rough landing. I learned that when done well, communication builds trust, and moves people to act. But when done poorly, communication simply creates noise – and noise deafens.
Our power lies in our choice of language and story. Through it, we shape perspective.
After 30 years in government, a multi-national corporation, and independent consulting — spanning urban strategy & economic development, HR & organisational change, PR & communications, and board leadership, Kartwheel was founded in 2021. It is a culmination of deep corporate experience, a genuine love of language, and a restless curiosity to help say the right thing, to the right people, in the right way.
